Caring for Delicate Jewelry Chains

Delicate chains can catch on clothing, hair, and other jewelry, so handle them by the clasp or a sturdy section rather than pulling on the links. Put necklaces on after getting dressed when possible, and take them off before exercise, sleep, or activities that involve repeated movement. Avoid tugging a chain free if it catches; ease it away slowly to prevent stretching or breakage.

To store a fine chain, fasten the clasp and place it flat in its own compartment or soft pouch. You can also hang it from a dedicated hook if it will not be bumped or tangled with other pieces. Keeping chains separate from rings and heavier necklaces prevents abrasion. Before wearing one, check the clasp and links for signs of wear, especially near the point where the pendant attaches.

Clean according to the chain's metal and finish, using a soft cloth for ordinary residue. Avoid strong cleaners and rough brushes, which may damage a delicate link or surface treatment. If the chain is knotted, lay it on a clear surface and gently tease the knot apart with a smooth tool; never pull both ends sharply. A jeweler can inspect or repair a damaged chain before it breaks.
