Getting Ring Fit Right Before You Buy

A ring that fits well is one you forget you are wearing. It should slide over the knuckle with a little resistance, sit snugly at the base of the finger without leaving a deep mark, and not spin freely when your hand hangs at your side. Getting there takes a little more care than wrapping a piece of string around your finger once.

Measure at the right moment

Fingers change size through the day. They tend to be slightly larger in the evening, after exercise or in warm weather, and smaller first thing in the morning or when your hands are cold. For the most reliable result, measure at room temperature, later in the day, and repeat it on two or three separate occasions. If your readings differ, the middle value is usually the safest choice.

Consider the knuckle and the band

If your knuckle is noticeably wider than the base of your finger, choose a size that just clears the knuckle. A ring sized only to the base may not go on at all. Band width matters too. Wide bands, roughly 6mm and above, cover more skin and often feel tighter, so many people go up a half size. Slim, delicate bands usually feel true to size. Comfort-fit bands, which are rounded on the inside, can feel a touch looser than flat ones.

Practical tips

Some rings can be resized easily, while others are difficult or impossible to adjust, such as eternity bands, some patterned designs and certain alternative metals. It is worth confirming the correct size before choosing these styles. Once you have the right fit, gentle routine care keeps your ring comfortable and bright.
